Istikhara is not a way of finding out the future. It is asking Allah to choose, and to make the right path easy. That distinction changes how you use it.

Istikhara is not a way of finding out the future. It is a prayer asking Allah to choose for you, and to make the right path easy and the wrong one difficult. That distinction changes how you use it.

The practice comes from a single well-known hadith, and the most useful thing anyone can do is read it before relying on what they have heard about it second hand.

The hadith

Jabir ibn Abdullah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach the companions istikhara in all matters, as he taught them a surah of the Qur'an. He said: "If any one of you is concerned about a matter, let him pray two rak'ah other than the obligatory prayer, then say…"

"O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge, and I seek ability by Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. For You are able and I am not, You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of all that is hidden. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it."

Sahih al-Bukhari 1166 · narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah · chain: Qutaybah → Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Mawali → Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir → Jabir

At the point in the dua where it says "this matter", the narration notes that the person names the thing they are asking about.

How to pray it

  1. Decide what the actual question is. "Should I marry this person" is a question. "What should I do with my life" is not.
  2. Pray two rak'ah that are not one of the five obligatory prayers.
  3. After the prayer, say the dua above, naming your matter where the text indicates.
  4. Then act. Make the decision you think is best with the information you have.

What istikhara is not

Three misunderstandings cause most of the confusion.

For a marriage decision specifically: istikhara is most useful after you have done the work, not instead of it. Meet with the wali present. Ask the difficult questions. Speak to people who know them. Then pray, decide, and accept the outcome. A decision made on good information and handed to Allah is the point.

Common questions

Do you have to see a dream after istikhara?

No. The hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari does not mention dreams at all. It asks Allah to make the matter easy and to bless it if it is good, and to turn it away if it is not. A dream is not part of the reported practice and is not required.

How many times can you pray istikhara?

The hadith does not set a number. Many scholars say it may be repeated while the matter remains undecided. If you still have no clarity, the answer is usually more consultation and more information, not more repetitions.

Can you pray istikhara for marriage?

Yes. The hadith says 'if any one of you is concerned about a matter', which covers any permissible decision, including marriage. It is normally done alongside consultation with people who know both parties, not instead of it.

When should istikhara be prayed?

It is two rak'ah outside the obligatory prayers, so it can be prayed at any time those are permitted, followed by the dua. There is no requirement that it be at night.

Where Misaq fits

Misaq is a marriage app built for people who want the process to look like this from the start. The wali registers before matching begins and has their own dashboard. Every member is verified with government ID and a live selfie. You see one compatible match at a time, not a feed. And it is free until a real connection happens.
